Net · VAT · GrossThe rule
Net = gross ÷ 1.05. VAT = gross − net. A common mistake is subtracting 5% of the gross: that removes too much, because the VAT was calculated on the net figure, not the gross one.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I take 5% VAT off a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.05. The result is the net price; the difference between gross and net is the VAT.
Why divide by 1.05 and not subtract 5%?
Because the 5% was added to the net, not the gross. Subtracting 5% of the gross removes too much. Dividing by 1.05 reverses the original calculation exactly.
