How VAT works in the UAE

VAT is a consumption tax charged at each stage of the supply chain and ultimately borne by the final consumer. A VAT-registered business charges 5% on its taxable sales (output tax) and reclaims the 5% it pays on business purchases (input tax); it pays the difference to the FTA. If you sell an item for AED 1,000 you charge the customer AED 1,050 — the AED 50 is VAT collected on behalf of the FTA.

Remove VAT: the quick method

To take 5% VAT out of a VAT-inclusive (gross) price, divide by 1.05. The result is the net price; the difference is the VAT.

Figures are rounded to two decimals. For the full formula and the factors you can drop into a spreadsheet, see the VAT formula page.

Standard, zero-rated and exempt

Not every supply is taxed at 5%. Some are zero-rated (0% — for example exports outside the GCC, international transport, and certain healthcare and education) and some are exempt (for example certain financial services, residential rent and local passenger transport). The difference matters for input-tax recovery — see VAT in the UAE.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove 5% VAT from a gross amount?

Divide the gross amount by 1.05 to get the net amount, then subtract the net from the gross to get the VAT. For example, AED 105.00 ÷ 1.05 = AED 100.00 net, and AED 5.00 VAT.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, introduced on 1 January 2018 and administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Some supplies are zero-rated (0%) or exempt.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. The calculator runs entirely in your browser, needs no sign-up, and works on mobile and desktop.

Does the UAE have a reduced VAT rate?

No. There is a single standard rate of 5%. Other supplies are either zero-rated (0%) or exempt from VAT — there is no separate reduced positive rate.
